Peyrii's Cartographer Workshop
The Old Juvenal Dormitory
about the building
In a few words: The oldest parts date from the 400s. This building originally housed an institution dependent on the Temple of The Mists, the Novice Dormitory (or “Juvenal Dormitory”, after an old denomination). Hence its name that it still bears, despite the change of function over time. From 480 to 610, the Threnods resided here, then moved to a new Choir School (on the Choir School Ladder), now disappeared. During the serious troubles of 789 and following years, this notable institution was closed then ravaged and burned down. Around 815, the Peyriis bought the lot and the ruins that still stood there and undertook to restore the buildings. Now, the former Juvenal Dormitory houses the Peyrii’s Workshop, a famous but very private place where the scribes-cartographers drawn the world’s most elaborated maps.
The architecture of this real estate complex is extremely interesting because it houses very ancient remains, dating back for some to the antic city Tanith Lenath. The neighborhood is in close proximity to the Temple of the Mist, and the patterns found on the Peyrii’s Grand Cadastre reveal circular and concentric geometries around the Temple. These circular patterns are visible on the ground, even in the nearby streets that follow these ancient circles. In the building, which now belongs to the Peyrii, as well as in the neighboring plots, parts of antic walls have been incorporated into modern constructions. A spiral staircase, used to connect the floors in the private section of the Peyrii’s building, is considered as one of the oldest remnants in Laelith still in daily use. Its worn steps bear witness to its use over time, even though some restoration works were made for obvious safety reasons. What piques curiosity when someone takes this staircase is its inclination, making it quite perilous if you don’t pay attention to each step. Indeed, this part of the structure has undergone deformations due to the cataclysm that struck the region. The current staircase serves only three levels: the first floor, the second floor and the third of this habitable part of the Peyrii workshop. However, it is evident that it once extended much further, both in the now-vanished upper levels and in the filled-in basements.
About the Peyriis
Amonghts the oldest Laelithian’s families, the Peyriis aren’t the more famous, as they weren’t in the heart of the Palace nor Temples goers. However, they had a particular attachment for The Mists for historical reasons. No one of the Peyriis where priest, clerk or mere attendant but always Special Advisor beside The Mists Hight Priest. Some malicious gossips said the Peyriis aren’t believers. On this point, maybe. On other hands, they believe!
