This neighborhood has a false air of Prosperity: a few renowned establishments, carnivorous flowers on the balconies, liveried doormen sheltered under the carriage entrances, a semblance of calm in the air and good fortune. But it is dangerous, in The Punishment, to trust only appearances.

This district is a stone vampire, a tick on the back of the Terrace, a sort of syphon where money ends up as if sucked into the bottom of voracious purses. The entrepreneurs who reside there all have something to reproach themselves for. Slave traders, swindlers, sorcerers and other victim merchants have a foothold there. With long teeth, all ready to bite under the deceptive smile, these wealthy people with full pockets are just waiting for a misstep, a sideways glance to accuse you of all evils, jump at your throat and send their heavy hitters after you. Unless, of course, your purse is fuller than theirs. In this case, they will be all sugar and honey, just waiting for the right moment to betray you and try to snatch your fortune.
