Place of the Caryatids
The living caryatids are a fascinating curiosity that can be discovered in The High Terrace, more precisely at the Place of the Caryatids. This place is always very lively, with richly dressed people coming and going, talking loudly and displaying important airs. Travelers, too, discover the place with wonder. The square is bordered by arcades that give it a beautiful architectural unity, and hackberry trees offer refreshing shade during the summer months.
Above the arcades, one can see magnificent palaces with decorated facades, as well as sorts of temples that are actually the homes of wealthy clerics living on this terrace. To the northwest, beyond a vast open space, stands the majestic God-King Palace.
The term “living caryatids” evokes a certain magic or mystery, as if these sculptures come to life before the eyes of passersby. The stillness of these famous living statues can last for days before they deliver a cryptic message, information about the life of the terrace, or a comment of frightening banality.
This adds a mythical and intriguing dimension to this already enchanting place. The Place of the Caryatids is thus a place where architecture and imagination meet, creating a unique atmosphere that captivates curious minds.
