The Blue Abacus
Master Grasspath, the owner, is a pawnbroker. You never step through the door of this vulture's nest without a shudder. To see one's life, one's work.
Seen from the street, nothing really distinguishes Master Grasspath's residence. It is a narrow house, all in height, with a sloping roof of small green tiles and wooden shutters carefully colorwashed in blue.
The whole set exudes a penny-pinching frugality and even, one might say, judging by the narrowness of this facade crushed between its neighbors, a certain parsimony.
Above the front door, an old abacus painted the same blue as the shutters, swings at the end of a chain. And one suddenly understands that “parsimony” and “frugality” must be replaced by “usury”.
Master Grasspath exercises the profession of pawnbroker indeed.
