The Messenger's House

This opulent mansion known as “The Messenger's House” is the property of Hermès Fulcanel - no doubt a pseudonym.

This large private house looks very old. It was probably once a large shop, as evidenced by the remains of a storefront now hidden by large windows with colored opaque panes which, at first sight, figure a large abstract pattern. It has also preserved from some previous era a large double door in exotic wood on which is engraved in different languages and runs the word: “Messenger be welcome”.

Several ornamental pediments placed under the balconies and on the facades decorate the house. They consist of several more or less sophisticated bas-reliefs representing small sculpted figures. Some are simple faces, others compose small complex scenes featuring allegorical characters. Most passersby see them as mere fables or childish nursery rhymes illustrations, but some alchemists in town read much more cryptic scholarly about fundamental secrets of their craft. The pinnacles of the windows are surmounted by various gargoyles: phoenixes, fantastic lions, crows, salamanders and a whole host of known and unknown fantastic creatures. During year, a wisteria bloom around the door and run along the façade. She has the particularity of changing color throughout the seasons, going from blue-black flowers, then cream-white and finally yellow-red at the end of flowering.

Hermès, the discreet owner, never presented himself as an alchemist. He mentioned a few times to be in the service of Laelith, of the God King and even, on one occasion, he mentioned working for the Lithos themselves…
